Cardinal George Pell - one of the world's highest ranking Catholics - is in jail after being found guilty of five child sex offences, and his conviction has sent shockwaves across the globe.

The verdict immediately generated a media frenzy from which two camps emerged: those who accepted the conviction, and those who questioned it. Pell was a conservative martyr, the second group said, hated for his conservative opinions and his senior position in the church.

For years, the public has known the church covered up priests abusing parishioners and moved them around to avoid scrutiny. Can the Australian Catholic Church survive the conviction of such a senior member of the clergy?
