Expedite land acquisition for Nemom coaching terminal: Railway minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Union minister for railways Piyush Goyal urged the state government and people’s representatives to expedite the land acquisition process for development of Nemom coaching terminal.
He was inaugurating the foundation stone laying ceremony for the coaching terminal at Nemom, through video conference from New Delhi on Thursday.

“Nemom coaching terminal is a long-standing demand. The coaching terminal will help in decongesting the already overloaded coaching terminals (Thiruvananthapuram Central and Kochuveli station). With the commencement of work, we can provide more trains, which originate or terminate at Thiruvananthapuram Central,” said Goyal.

“Only a small portion of the work could be started due to lack of availability of land. I request people’s representatives and state government and officials to help expedite the land acquisition. We gave request to government to acquire 7.18 hectares on March 26, 2018,” he added.

The estimated cost of the work is Rs 148.32 crore, excluding land cost. Five stabling lines, one common loop, one down main line and one up main line, two platforms, three railway over bridges, reconstruction of an aqueduct, one foot-overbridge, shunting neck and related signalling and electrical works are part of the project.

It requires acquisition of 7.18 hectares, which is estimated to cost Rs 142.84 crore. Railways has formed a land acquisition cell and started a social impact assessment study in this regard.

Railways decided to take up the work in existing land and the tender for the work of providing main lines, common loop, two platforms and reconstruction of ROBs in Nemam yard have been awarded at a cost of Rs 15.50 crore. The works are likely to be completed in 12 months.


A Sampath, MP, and O Rajagopal, MLA, who attended the function demanded to rename Kochuveli and Nemam railway statiosn as Thiruvananthapuram North and Thiruvananthapuram South respectively.


MLA I B Satheesh, additional divisional railway manager of Thiruvananthapuram division P Jayakumar, etc. were present at the function.


Meanwhile, minister G Sudhakaran requested the central government to implement projects including coach factory at Palakkad, Kerala railway zone, Thalassery-Mysore and Nilambur-Nanjacode railway lines.
