The police wore masks while entering the Flights VS610 and escorting the passengers and crew to a holding area for medical assessment.

Those on flights were suffering from hacking coughs and sore throats , although the illness was not immediately diagnosed.

It is expected that the passengers went home following a cruise in Barbados.

There was confirmation by South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Trust to attend an inbound flight at Gatwick airport shortly before 5 am on 6 March after getting reports that a number of crew and passengers felt sick.

Virgin Atlantic said that a number of customers onboard the VS610, which landed at London Gatwick this morning from Barbados, reported feeling unwell.

The plane was met by the relevant authorities as a precautionary measure, there were screenings onboard which is in line with standard health and safety procedures.

The airlines supported those affected keeping the well being of their customers and  crew a top priority.

Customers could continue their journey as normal after leaving their aircraft.
