Elephant kills mahout’s son

A 27-year-old man died after he was attacked by an elephant at Kozhikamuthi elephant camp. The incident happened on Tuesday when K. Ayyappan, son of Karuppasamy, a mahout, was taking the female elephant Durga for grazing. Police said that the elephant suddenly attacked Ayyappan injuring him.

He was initially taken to a private hospital at Amabarampalayam near Pollachi and later shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital where he died without responding to treatment on Thursday, police said. The incident happened when 25 elephants of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, including Durga are undergoing the 48-day-long annual rejuvenation camp. The Forest Department is likely to give compensation to the family of the deceased.
