Farmers worried over paddy procurement
TNN | Mar 8, 2019, 04:44 ISTTirupur: Farmers of Dharapuram taluk in the district are now a worried lot after the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (Tncsc) failed to consider their request of procuring more quantity of paddy.
Paddy was cultivated in around 20,000 acres in this region this year with the support of Amaravathi Old Ayacut irrigation. Three Direct procurement centers (DPCs) at Alangiyam, Govindapuram and Chattiram in Dharapuram taluk are live as paddy harvest is going on.
With the private traders ready to buy grade A paddy only at a rate of Rs 16 per kg, most farmers approached DPCs, where the MSP was Rs 18.40 per kg. But the DPCs procured only lesser quantity, forcing farmers to wait in queue. Many farmers had brought the paddy and kept them in front of the DPCs.
“The DPCs were procuring only 800 numbers of 40kg paddy bags in a day. It is not enough because of the long queue. On continuous request, the procuring quantity has been doubled in Alangiyam DPC. In case of Govindapuram and Chattiram DPCs, the same 800 numbers are followed,” said R Eswaran of Inthiya Ulavar Ulaippalar Katchi.
“The farmers, who were waiting in the queue, fear that they may not able to save the paddy if it rain. The district administration should consider their request and procure the paddy in more quantity,” he added.
