Death for Kalyan man who raped, killed student

KALYAN: Terming the Shahapur engineering student rape and murder case the "rarest of rare" and "heinous", special sessions court Judge N M Waghmare sentenced a 33-year-old accused to death on Wednesday, six years after the crime. Ashok Mukane (33) was held guilty of rape and murder under IPC.
The sentence will have to be confirmed by Bombay high court.
The judge said he wanted to send out a strong message to society as the case involved the safety and self-esteem of women. The victim, who was studying in Ambernath, after reaching Asangaon railway station, was walking home to Shahapur when Mukane took her to the bushes, raped and strangled her to death on September 5, 2013.
Shahapur police had registered rape and murder cases and Mukane was arrested by inspector Sunil Vadke and his team five days later.
Waghmare also imposed a Rs 5,000 fine, which if he did not pay, would have to also undergo simple imprisonment for three months.
