Unveils MGR statue and kicks off highway projects worth ₹5,010 crore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for five National Highway projects and dedicated projects of Southern Railways, Highways Department and the Ennore LNG terminal in Tamil Nadu, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The highway projects are worth ₹5,010 crore.

He also unveiled a statue of former Chief Minister MGR at the Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women.

Mega rally

The projects were unveiled via video-conferencing from Kilambakkam. The Prime Minister then left to address a mega political rally of the NDA at a venue nearby.

He laid the foundation stone for four-laning of 116.5-km Vikravandi-Sethiathope-Cholapuram-Thanjavur section of NH-36 (old NH-45C) in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Thanjavur districts, six-laning of 36-km-long Karaipettai-Walajapet section of NH-48 (old NH-4) in Kancheepuram and Vellore districts, and construction of two lanes with paved shoulders along with strengthening of existing carriageway of Gudiatham bypass and Vellore bypass on NH-75 (old NH-234) in Vellore district.

He dedicated the Ennore LNG terminal worth ₹5,150 crore, two-laning of a section of NH-38 (Old NH-234) in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts, and four-laning of 32-km section of NH-381 in Tiruppur district to the nation.

He also dedicated the railway electrification between Erode, Karur and Tiruchirappalli, and Salem, Karur and Dindigul sections. These were completed between February and December 2018 at a total cost of ₹321 crore.
