Ranchi: Two businessman brothers were found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in an upscale bungalow that housed the office of a local Hindi news channel in Ashok Nagar area on Thursday morning. The main suspect, Sadhna News’ Jharkhand head Lokesh Chaudhary, is on the run, police said.
Police said, “Hemant and Mahendra Agarawal from Jharia in Dhanbad were called by Chaudhary for a meeting. They were apparently told that they will be returned Rs 5 lakh that was borrowed from them.” The two were also running an air cargo business, police added.
City SP Sujata Veenapani said: “According to the relatives of the victims, the accused (Chaudhary) had borrowed Rs 5 lakh from them and he wasn’t returning it. During the course of investigations, we found that four more people were involved in the murders. We are investigating the case and the accused will be nabbed at the earliest.” A senior police said that the accused had deactivated his social media accounts and his last known location was somewhere around Patna in Bihar.
Police said the security guard on duty at the bungalow has been detained and is being interrogated. The two-wheeler used by the brothers was also found outside the bungalow. A sub-inspector at Lalpur police station said: “The brothers left their local residence in Lalpur around 3pm on Wednesday on two-wheeler but didn’t return. Their family members tried calling them, but to no avail. Finally, they lodged a missing persons complaint at our police station.”
Lalpur police launched a search operation and managed to track down their cellphones to the bungalow Ashok Nagar. The two bodies were found during a raid on the bungalow on Thursday morning. “The deceased were shot point blank. The bodies had several bullet injuries,” a police officer said, adding that the bodies have been sent for autopsy.
Speaking to TOI, a family friend of the deceased said: “The brothers had a history of financial dealings with Chaudhary. I believe they had a fallout over the loaned he had taken.”
