Heidi Montag has people reeling after defending the lack of diversity on The Hills by saying the cast members have different hair colors.
The 32-year-old stars in MTV's upcoming reunion series, The Hills: New Beginnings, which is a mix of original cast members and new faces, and like its predecessor, the cast members are almost exclusively white.
When Heidi sat down with Vogue to discuss the reboot, she was asked if she wished there was a 'little more diversity represented' on the show. The reality star responded by pointing out that Audrina Patridge and Mischa Barton both have 'darker hair.'

Real rebuttal: Heidi Montag, 32, has defended the lack of diversity on The Hills by saying the cast members have different hair colors

Argument: Heidi insisted they don't 'all look the same,' pointing out that Audrina Patridge (left) and Mischa Barton (right) have 'darker hair
'We don't all look the same. I mean, Audrina has darker hair; I feel like Mischa has darker hair. But, yeah, we're California girls,' she said.
'It's a group of friends and that just happens to be the group that came together. But, you know, that's just the way the show was. I have other very diverse friends that are not featured on the show,' she added.
Many of the former cast members have signed on to return to the reboot, including Heidi's husband Spencer Pratt, her sister-in-law Stephanie Pratt, Whitney Port, and Brody Jenner, but a few familiar faces will be missing.
Lauren Conrad, the original narrator of the show, and Kristin Cavallari, who took over after LC's departure, will not be a part of the reboot.

Throwback: Like The Hills (pictured), the cast members on The Hills: New Beginnings are almost exclusively white

OGs: Heidi and her husband Spencer Pratt are returning to the reboot with Justin 'Bobby' Brescia, Stephanie Pratt, Frankie Delgado, Ashley Wahler, Jason Wahler, and Audrina (L to R)
There has been plenty of publicity for the highly-anticipated reality series, but it's Heidi's thoughts on diversity that have people on Twitter going wild.
Many couldn't believe that she actually used hair color to defend the lack of diversity on the show.
'She really said "Audrina has darker hair..." as a rebuttal for a lack of diversity on the Hills,' Ryan Smith tweeted.
Hillary Kelly commented: 'Jesus H Christ they ask Heidi Pratt if she wishes the show were more diverse and she points out that 'Audrina has darker hair."'

Added bonus: Heidi also insisted she has 'other very diverse friends' who are not on the show

Outrage: There has been plenty of publicity for the highly-anticipated reality series, but it's Heidi's thoughts on diversity that have people on Twitter going wild

'Heidi on the lack of diversity on #TheHills: "We don't all look the same. I mean, Audrina has darker hair. I feel like Mischa has darker hair." Oh we're back in the 2000s alright,' Pahull Bains added.
Meanwhile, Ashleigh Sean couldn't resist cracking a joke about Heidi's plastic surgeries, saying: 'To be fair Heidi has looked like 3 different people in the past decade. That’s what I call diversity.'
There were plenty of people who insisted they weren't at all shocked by Heidi's response, noting that it was exactly what they would expect from her.
'Heidi was like “Diversity!??! You ain’t see the girl w/ the dark hair” Girl, what!?!?! I can’t even be upset!' one person tweeted. 'She responded exactly how I expected her to! Race simply does not matter in her world & if you think any of those girls have “diverse friends” you’re bugging!'

Another Twitter user added: 'Heidi Montag‘s response to being asked about the lack of diversity on The Hills is precisely what you would expect.'
Some weren't entirely sure if Heidi even knows what diversity means.
'Heidi Montag answering a question about diversity on The Hills might as well have been Ron Burgundy thinking diversity is an old wooden ship...' Alexandra Sweet tweeted along with an Anchorman GIF.
The comments range from critics slamming her for her ignorance to fans wondering why Vogue would ask her about diversity in the first place.
I’m crying @ that video asking Heidi about diversity on the Hills,' one person tweeted. 'Are people okay? Did we watch The Hills for accurate POC representation? Lmao!!! Next we’ll be asking for more queer Muslim representation on Made in Chelsea or some s**t. Lol.'

'Honestly, I’m not watching The Hills for diversity. Having characters of color isn’t going to win brownie points or make more POC watch. A lot of us already watch it... We watch to see “rich white girls” do “rich white girl s**t while living in rich a** LA”... period,' another person said.
Someone else agreed, tweeting: 'I'm gagging. First of all the question is stupid bc no one cares about diversity on The Hills. For me it was like a valley girl safari. Representation ain't everything PLS.'
The person added that it was 'a perfect Heidi answer to be honest.'
Then there were those who argued the real point of discussion should be the portraits of Heidi and Spencer that are hanging on walls behind her during the interview.
'Heidi from The Hills not knowing what diversity means: unsurprising. What I am surprised about: the large photographs of her and Spencer on the wall that no one has mentioned. What the f**k,' one person tweeted.
