Police said seven youths — all students of DAV College, Sector 10, and pursuing Bachelors of Arts (BA), were at the party in the first-floor accommodation of the three-storeyed building when the assailants struck, most probably in the early hours of the day. The crime was detected at 7am — two morning walkers found Vishal, who hailed from Rewari and was selected in the Haryana Police, lying on the ground floor in a pool of blood. When a police team entered the apartment, they found Pankaj, 22, a resident of Jind, was hit on his forehead with a sharp-edged weapon. Pankaj had started living in the apartment two months back on rent. He was to vacate the apartment on March 1, but extended his stay by a week. He had called Vishal and others for the party.

Police found Ashish, 22, with a bullet injury on his left leg. Surprisingly, two other youths were found sleeping in another room and had no clue about the attack. It was unclear where the rest of the two had gone. Police said they might have fled when the incident took place.

Vishal succumbed to his injuries owing to multiple bullet wounds on his chest. Pankaj and Ashish are undergoing treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.

Police sources said old rivalry was the likely reason behind the attack. Sources said Vishal had some enmity with one of the accused.

Police registered a case under Sections 302 (punishment for murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (act done by several person with same intention) of the IPC and under Arms Act.

Deputy superintendent of police (PRO) Charanjit Singh said, “The accused have been identified and multiple teams, including SHOs of south sub-division, are conducting raids in different states to nab them.”

In the morning, residents living nearby were shocked to find police parties in the locality. Many of them said they did not hear any sound of bullets.
