Coimbatore: The city police on Thursday arrested a man who posed as an IPS officer and threatened to kill a landlord and a call taxi driver for causing trouble to his kin. The arrested was identified as S Soorajkumar, 34, of Kalapatti.
Police said a woman relative of him was residing in a rental row house at Andal Thottam in Sundarapuram. “There was a dispute between her and her neighbour over sharing water. She called up Soorajkumar and told him about the issues she faced at the rental house,” a police officer said.

On Wednesday, Soorajkumar called up her landlord Kathiresan, 52, of Lawley Road, introduced himself as deputy commissioner of police and warned him to look into the issues faced by his relative immediately.

When Kathiresan requested a personal meeting with him, Soorajkumar came down to Sundarapuram and met the former and call taxi driver A Raja, a tenant at the row house who was authorised to collect rent from other tenants.

“Soorajkumar introduced himself as an IPS officer, who was working as a deputy commissioner of police, special task force, in Hyderabad. He threatened to arrest the duo if they were to torture his relative woman and shoot them if required,” the officer said.

The two subsequently approached the Podanur police, who conducted an inquiry and picked up Soorajkumar on Wednesday night. Based on Raja’s complaint, Podanur police inspector Maheswaran registered a case against Soorajkumar under Sections 170, 294 (b) and 506(i) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him on Thursday afternoon. He was produced before a judicial magistrate court, which remanded him in judicial custody. Later, Soorajkumar was lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
