PUNE: Women travelling by PMPML’s Tejaswini buses are in for a sweet surprise as the transport utility will provide them with free journey on every eighth day of the month from March 8, which also happens to be International Women’s Day.
A proposal to this effect was cleared by the director board of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) on Wednesday. Currently, as many as 38 Tejaswini buses are plying on various routes. The fleet is expected to rise up to 65 in the next few daysa PMPML official said.
Mayor Mukta Tilak said the all-women buses were completing 464 trips every day on 38 routes. “About 28 lakh women travellers have opted for these buses in the last one year. The public transport utility has earned an annual revenue of Rs 4.12 crore from these buses. The free rides will not just benefit women commuters, but will ensure more footfall,” Tilak said.
Siddharth Shirole, director, PMPML, said self-help group of widows and wives of former army officers will be hired for 40 buses.
“These women will also get a chance to work as conductors on these buses, while the buses will be driven by former armymen. Shirole said self-help group would procure 40 buses with help of the funds received under the state and central schemes for ex-servicemen welfare,” he said.
“PMPML plans to hire 440 BRT-complaint buses as well. The buses from self help groups will be hired at the same rate as from other contractors,” he added.
Shirole said the tendering process was initiated to procure 125 air-conditioned e-buses.
“A detailed project report was expected to be finalized soon pertaining to the development of PMPML’s depot and land. The project aims at pushing up non-fare revenue of the utility,” he said.
