PATNA: A newly married woman committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging herself, hours after her husband was shot dead by her father in what is being regarded as a case of honour killing. Rupesh Tiwari (25) and Tara Kumari (21), who had married about 10 days ago, belonged to different castes.
Vaishali SP Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said while Rupesh was a Brahmin from Lalganj in Vaishali, Tara belonged the Kahar community, which comes under extremely backward classes. She was from Takiapar village in Patna. The man was shot at his parent’s rented accomodation in Vaishali.
“The couple got married at a temple in Patna on February 25 this year. No member from the woman’s family attended the wedding as they were strongly against it,” the SP said.
Dhillon said Tara, in her statement to police, said her father and another person had come to their rented accommodation around 6am on Wednesday and shot Rupesh. The two fled after shooting the man. Three empty cartridges were recovered from the spot.
After the murder, while the male members of the family were busy with the post-mortem and related formalities, Tara was home with family. She was founnd hanging in her room around 2.30pm by a relative.
“Police investigation was underway and raids were being carried out to nab the accused,” Dhillon said.
“A murder case has been registered for Rupesh’s death and another case of abetment to suicide will be lodged,” he said adding woman’s father, Muku Baba, has been named as the accused. His accomplice is yet to be identified, Dhillon added.
