Kiran Bedi condoles death of former Puducherry lieutenant governor Virendra Kataria

PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi on Thursday condoled the death of lieutenant governor Virendra Kataria who passed away in New Delhi on March 5 at the age of 87.
A former Rajya Sabha MP, Kataria served as the lieutenant governor of Puducherry from July 2013 to July 2014.
In her condolence message, Bedi said she was deeply grieved to learn about the sad demise of Kataria. "Shri Virendra Kataria, during his long public life, by virtue of his vast knowledge and experience, discharged his duties with utmost commitment and dignity. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and pray to the Almighty to give strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss," Bedi said.
Kataria is survived by a son, a daughter, two grandsons and in-laws. The last rites will be held on March 8.
Gaining confidence
A former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president, Kataria gained the confidence of the residents of the Union territory within a few days of his appointment by taking proactive measures in restoring law and order in Puducherry.
He was instrumental in sealing a cellphone tower, which was erected near the Puducherry Central Prison. The tower made the cellphone jammer in the prison ineffective. The sealing of the tower prevented the criminals lodged in the prison from operating their network using mobile phones. He was the first lt governor to visit the prison and review the security measures.
He visited traders, who were attacked by rowdy elements demanding money. During his one-year tenure, he made himself easily accessible to all section of people.
