Nagpur: India and Pakistan may have come close to a conflict a fortnight ago, but there is a common link between the two nations when it comes to Metro rail projects. The coaches for Metro to run in cities of Nagpur and Lahore come from the same Chinese company.
Chinese Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), a government company in China, has bagged the order to supply 69 coaches for Nagpur Metro. The same company is supplying coaches to the metro rail project in Lahore, named Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT), through one of its subsidiary.
A search on the website of CRRC shows up two different press releases about the company having bagged orders for Nagpur and Lahore projects.
A press release on the CRRC website dated March 29, 2017, says CRRC Dalian Co had bagged an order for 69 Metro cars for Nagpur, which is referred as the largest city in Central India. The trains are for two urban rails in the city with a total length of 38km. The agreement also incudes a 10-year maintenance contract, says the note on the website.
CRRC Dalian is a subsidiary of CRRC. The press release says it had received the first order in May, 2015, for providing 112 coaches for Kolkata. The release adds India has become an important market for Chinese train makers.
There is another press release which says on May 15, 2014, a train set designed for Pakistani subway rolled off the production line in Central China’s Hunan Province. The train was produced by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive. With a stainless steel car body, the train was designed for the 25.58km metro line in Lahore.
The project in Lahore is a part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and will be Pakistan’s first modern mass rapid transport system.
For Nagpur, CRRC had bagged the contract beating Indian PSU, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), and West Bengal-based Titagargh Wagons. CRRC’s contract has been pegged at Rs851 crore.
