Malaysian automobile firm may set up shop in India

Malaysian automobile manufacturer Perodua will soon be entering the Indian market and is looking to manufacture its cars here.

The car-maker will be displaying two of their cars — Perodua MYVI and Perodua Bezza at the 8th edition of International Engineering Sourcing Show (IESS), organised by the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), which will be held in Chennai from March 14 to 16.

“They are interested in the Indian market. But I’m not the official person to comment on this,” said Sooraj Dhawan of Falcon Capital Advisors, a consultant for Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii). A senior delegation from Perodua will be at the IESS event to explore business opportunities in India, he added.

The eight edition of IESS will focus on innovation and technology, smart factory design, subcontracting and industrial internet of things. Malaysia is the partner country for this year’s event, which will see over 400 exhibitors, 14 technical sessions and 80 plus speakers. This year’s event is also open for third and fourth year engineering students.

“Design will be one of the key aspects that we will be discussing during this meet,” said Mahesh K. Desai, senior vice-chairman of EEPC. The event will also focus on promoting ayurveda with the help technology.

C.H. Nadiger, Regional Director, EEPC India, said, “Engineering exports is the largest commodity exports in India accounting for 25% of the total exports. In 2017-18, it achieved a record performance of $76.2 billion. Engineering exports registered 16.81% growth in 2017-18 as against 11% in the previous fiscal. Currently, major markets like the U.S. and EU account for over 30% of of our exports,” he added.

Tamil Nadu MSME Secretary Dharmendra Pratap Yadav said the State offered schemes and programmes for MSMEs to participate in internationals expos and shows that would help them identify new areas of business. “The IESS event will help Tamil Nadu MSMEs to get international exposure,” he said.
