Samsung Galaxy Fold to be launched in India, will be more expensive

“Because the Galaxy Fold will not be manufactured in India, it will be more expensive to buy here”

Samsung has officially confirmed that its foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, will be available for purchase in India. An actual date wasn’t given, but rest assured, folks in India will be able to get their hands on the new piece of technology. The Galaxy Fold is the first foldable phone from Samsung and features a 4.6-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch display on the inside. It is powered by the Snapdragon 855 processor, which is coupled with 12GB RAM, 512GB of storage and a 4,380mAh battery.

During the Indian announcement of the new Samsung Galaxy S10 series earlier today, the company confirmed that the Galaxy Fold will also come to the country. DJ Koh, the President and CEO of Samsung’s IT and Mobile Communications Division, announced the same at the event. He stated the following while speaking to select media personnel in New Delhi:

“Indian market is, I clearly said, most important market — not only investment and everything, my long-term commitment is towards the market. In this market, why will I not deliver my newest technology innovation? Yes, I will do.”

He did not provide any details about pricing or the exact date when Samsung plans to launch the phone. However, he mentioned that the phone would be manufactured in India, but will not use the ‘Made in India’ logo. The company plans on manufacturing all the units in one single plant as there will be limited quantities of the phone on sale. Because of this, the phone could be priced more in India.

When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Fold last month, it announced that the phone could be pre-ordered in April for a price of $1980. That’s about Rs 1,40,000 in Indian currency and it could end up costing more after taxes and other charges. We expect the phone to be launched in India alongside other regions. Apart from confirming that the Galaxy Fold is coming to India, Koh also stated that the Galaxy S10 5G will arrive when the time is right.

As of now, India doesn’t really have the infrastructure for 5G enabled devices. It will happen eventually and Samsung is already working with several carriers to speed up the process.
