Chennai: 2,500 school students take free metro rides

CHENNAI: More than 2,500 students from corporation and government schools took free rides in the month of February as part of Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s (CMRL) monthly field trips. Nearly 29,000 students travelled in metro trains taking educational trips in the academic year of 2018-19.
Students are taken on free rides from Central metro to airport, AG-DMS to airport and AG-DMS to Washermenpet. During the ride, students are shown and explained the various commuter friendly features available in the train. They are also taken around to a few metro stations to show the facilities.
The initiative, which was started a year ago, was to raise awaremness among stdunets on the various facilities and the benefits of using metro rail facility to save time spent on trdaily commute.
A decade after construction began, CMRL now operates 45km phase from Washermenpet to Airport via the underground section on Anna Salai and Central metro to St Thomas Mount through the underground corridor on Poonamallee high road and the elevated section on 100 feet road.
