VASCO: A 45-year old man travelling from Dubai, UAE, was apprehended on Wednesday at Goa International Airport while attempting to smuggle gold into the country. Customs sleuths said the passenger had concealed the gold in the waistband of his jeans, a modus oprandi used by a woman in February.

Based on suspicions, customs officers frisked the passenger — hailing from Karnataka — who had arrived from Dubai on an Air India flight. They found 590g of gold which had been broken down into a paste and subsequently concealed in his jeans waistband.

The gold, worth Rs 18 lakh, has been seized under the Goa Customs Act 1962.

Incidentally, the woman who was nabbed in February also attempted to smuggle the exact same quantity of gold and officers feel that the two cases may be linked. “The investigation is on. This is all that we know at the primary inquiry level,” said a Customs officer on condition of anonymity.

Since April 2018, the Goa airport customs has recovered gold worth Rs 2.5 crore and foreign currency worth Rs 75 lakh.
