Hubballi: Increasing mercury levels in the city has impacted footfalls at the Khadi Mela organized by Khadi and Village Industries Commission and Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangh (KKGSS) at Glass house. The khadi products and handicrafts on sale at the mela have not attracted customers. The 15-day mela is aimed at popularising khadi and village products and will conclude on Friday.
Organizers say the scorching temperature was the main reason for the poor turnout at the mela. Products worth Rs 1.25 crore have been sold so far as against the target of Rs 3 crore, they say.
KKGSS secretary Shivanand Mathapati said, “Only a few people are visiting the Mela. Normally women in large numbers used to visit to the exhibition, but this time many did not turn up. When inquired, many said they aren’t visiting the mela due to high temeratures.”
Krishnanand Patil, a resident in Navanagar visited the Khadi Mela recently. “Due to the heat, I came alone and did bring my family members. Moreover, just a month ago the Khadi federation had organized a mela at the same place and sold similar products. People who visited the earlier mela may not be interested in this mela. However, this mela has many interesting products,” he added.
Some visitors say lack of proper publicity is alos a reason for the poor response. Ramakrishna, 75, from Deshpande Nagar said, “I was not aware of the mela until two days ago. The organisers need to make proper publicity of such events.”
The mela has 75 stalls showcasing khadi products as well as village handicrafts.
