T’puram: The sub-inspector of Chirayinkeezhu police station, S Niyas, was placed under suspension on allegations of bribery by district police chief (rural) B Ashok on Wednesday. The latter has also ordered a probe into the allegations.

According to police, the officer was placed under suspension for allegedly demanding and accepting a sum of Rs 25,000 as bribe from a temple trust member of Chenkulam Mahadeva Temple at Chirayinkeezhu.

The temple trust wanted to to fill beach sand on the temple premises. They took permission from the villager officer and brought a truck load of sand to the temple. But, SI Niyas confiscated the truck along with the sand and demanded Rs 25,000 to release it. Following this, the temple authorities were forced to pay the money on February 26. Another person, who was entrusted by Niyas, received the money on the officer’s behalf.

The temple trust authorities, however, decided to file a complaint against Niyas before Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau. When the district police chief learned about it he ordered a preliminary inquiry and found merit in the allegations, following which Niyas was placed under suspension. tnn
