Stacey Dooley: Second Chance Sex Offenders
SBS Viceland, 8.30pm
This episode of Stacey Dooley Investigates poses some fascinating questions. In Florida, there are severe restrictions around where convicted sex offenders can live – and even if you manage to find a place, the State erects a large red sign outside the front gate saying Sexual Predator Lives Here. And names you. But do convicted sex offenders deserve to be punished for the rest of their lives – including, in effect, being made homeless? Does doing so actually protect children – or make them more vulnerable? And are lifelong penalties really more about revenge than justice? Stacey Dooley is just the person to explore these issues. She brings intelligence, fair-mindedness and compassion to the job but also the gifts of the amateur journalist. She has the ability to reflect on the information and impressions she's receiving and share her thoughts. And she's able to respond as a human being to the situations she finds herself in, rather than having to maintain the facade of impartial gatherer of facts. It makes for a discussion of this vexed issue that's as compelling as it is enlightening.
