A heartbroken young couple robbed in the middle of night as they slept have pleaded for the gutless thieves to return two newborn puppies stolen in the break-in.

Lewis Davies claims thieves broke into his home in the Brisbane suburb of Mitchleton in the the early hours of Monday morning as he, his fiancee Sophie Kennedy and their two young children slept upstairs.

Queensland Police are now investigating the theft of more than $4000 worth of electronic equipment, including a laptop and games consoles, passports and other forms of identification.

But it's the theft of two one-month-old Maltese Shih tzu cross puppies snatched from their mother that's devastated the family the most.

These newborn puppies were snatched from a Brisbane home in the early hours of Monday

Ms Kennedy posted a public appeal on the Lost and Found Pets In North Brisbane Facebook page, which has since garnered more than 8,500 shares.

A post on her own Facebook page attracted an additional 3,000 shares.

'Several items have been taken the main concern is they have taken two small white and black spotty Maltese shih tzu puppies out of a litter of five,' Ms Kennedy posted.

'These puppies are only three weeks old, they need their mum! We are not concerned about the material things we need those dogs back safe so they can survive.'

A Queensland Police spokeswoman confirmed to Daily Mail Australia investigations into the break-in, which happened between 2am and 3am on Monday, are ongoing.

'Please if this person is reading this please for the love of God bring the dogs back they need their mum! I feel so sick to my stomach knowing people were in our house while we slept. We need this person dealt with,' Ms Kennedy posted.

The puppies were too young to be separated from their mother Moet, who's been left distraught over their disappearance, her fiance added.

One puppy has black spots, while the other has brown patches.

'The dogs weren't even walking yet, they're eyes had only just opened,' Mr Davies told The Courier Mail.

'Moet is very distressed and didn't want to go near the rest of the puppies all day. We had to coax her.'

Mr Davies fears the stolen puppies won't be found in good shape.

'Unless you know what you're doing and have the patience and time to care for them. They need their mum still,' he pleaded.

Anyone with information is urged to call Policelink on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
