Thiruvananthapuram: State government on Wednesday initiated a major shuffle of top police officials ahead of the election notification. Government appointed Manoj Abraham as ADGP (south zone) and Sheikh Darvesh Sahib as ADGP (north zone).
The recently approved proposal for appointing ADGP (law and order) instead of two regional ADGPs was put on hold for the time being, considering the election.

The government also appointed K Padmakumar as ADGP (state crime records bureau) to replace incumbent Tomin J Thachankary, who has been posted as ADGP (coastal police). ADGP (administration) S Aananthakrishnan will hold the additional charge of ADGP (armed police battalion) while ADGP (intelligence) T K Vinod Kumar will hold the additional charge of ADGP (crimes).

The government has for the time being decided to freeze last week’s cabinet decision to change the structure of police. It was proposed to appoint DIGs in ranges and IGs in zones.

Going by the existing system, government appointed Balram Kumar Upadhyaya, who is currently IG (Kannur), as IG (Thrissur range). Instead, present IG (Thrissur) M R Ajith Kumar will be the new IG (Kannur).

IG (intelligence) Ashok Yadav has been appointed as IG (Thiruvananthapuram) while, Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar has been appointed DIG (internal security).

Incumbent Kozhikode city police commissioner Kori Sanjay Kumar Gurudin has been appointed as Thiruvananthapuram city police commissioner replacing S Surendran, who will be the new Kochi city police commissioner. A V George has been appointed the commissioner for Kozhikode. J Jayanath has been appointed as SP (internal security).

The government has decided to put on hold the proposal from the police to give magisterial powers to police commissioners of Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, and upgrade the ranks in these posts to that of IGs from that of existing DIGs. The decision has been put on hold as the law department had cited legal issues in the matter, which now is likely to be considered only after the general elections.
