Under a new Central welfare scheme

Implementation of Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mandhan Yojana, a pension scheme for unorganised sector workers, got underway with Collectors distributing identity cards to beneficiaries in districts on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the national scheme on Tuesday.

Distributing the identity cards under the scheme to a few beneficiaries in Tiruchi, Collector S. Sivarasu said the district had nearly 1.50 lakh workers in the unorganised sector. Those in the age group of 18 to 40 could join the social security scheme by paying a nominal monthly contribution to get a monthly pension of ₹3,000 upon retirement after 60 years of age.

Roadside vendors, rickshaw pullers, construction workers, housemaids, agricultural labourers, beedi workers, weavers and other workers in the sectorwould benefit from the scheme, he said.

Vanlal Muan, Regional Provident Fund Commissioner-I, Tiruchi, Radhakrishna Pandian, Additional Commissioner of Labour, and T. Dharmaseelan, Joint Commissioner of Labour, were present at the distribution function.
