Party has shortlisted poll candidates

Despite holding an emergency meeting with key office-bearers on Tuesday, DMDK founder Vijayakant did not make any announcement on joining the AIADMK-BJP alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

It is expected that the decision whether the party would join the alliance or go it alone would be made on Wednesday.

The indecisiveness of the party has left the AIADMK in suspense ahead of the National Democratic Alliance’s grand public meeting in Chennai on Wednesday, which would be attended by BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, senior AIADMK leader and Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar expressed confidence that the DMDK would eventually join the NDA.

The DMDK office-bearers who attended Tuesday’s meeting said that Mr. Vijayakant and his wife and party treasurer Premalatha had a discussion about the Parliamentary constituencies where the party could pull off a victory. The office-bearers added that the leadership had shortlisted candidates to be fielded by the party. The DMDK has been bargaining hard to be treated on a par with the PMK in terms of allocation of seats by the ruling party. AIADMK sources said the party won’t be able to offer more than four seats to the DMDK.
