PATNA: The state cabinet on Tuesday sanctioned Rs 110.67 crore for installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the city under Safe City Surveillance system of Smart City mission.

“Safe city system will go a long way in checking eve-teasing and ensuring safety of people across the state. Patna is the first city in the state to be chosen as the beneficiary of the scheme. The project will be executed by Patna Smart City Limited,” principal secretary of cabinet secretariat department Sanjay Kumar told reporters after the cabinet meeting. He, however, did not mention the number of cameras to be installed in the city under the scheme.

The Safe City Surveillance scheme was approved by the state cabinet on December 12, 2017. Senior police officers said the network of CCTV cameras would be connected to a centralised control room, which will be monitored round-the-clock by police personnel.

Patna SSP Garima Malik said 150 cameras are operational at present under Dial 100 scheme of Patna Police. “More than 300 CCTV cameras have been installed in the city by different agencies, including traffic police,” the SSP said.

Sources said the proposal of the Patna Police for installation of 591 CCTV and 31 automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras in the city was still pending with the Bihar Police. At least 11 ANPR cameras are already installed in the city. Sources, however, said some of these cameras were lying defunct.

According to sources in Bihar Police, 2,300 CCTV cameras are proposed to be installed in Patna, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga zones. Patna alone counts for 1,200 cameras.

The installation of CCTV cameras is being seen as an initiative by the state government to curb crime.

Residents have also hailed the government’s move to install CCTV cameras in the city. “Last week, motorcycle-borne criminals had snatched a cellphone from one of my friends in broad daylight at S K Nagar. The criminals are yet to be identified as no one could identify them. Had there been a CCTV camera at the location, the police would have found it easier to identify the criminals and arrest them,” said Ravi Parmar, a resident of S K Nagar.
