Three flyovers at a total cost of ₹ 360 crore will be constructed in Coimbatore in two years. Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami laid the foundation for these on Tuesday through video conference.
An official of the National Highways wing of the State Highways Department said the ground breaking function on Tuesday was for flyovers over Sungam - Ramanathapuram junctions, Koundampalayam - Nallampalayam Pirivu junction, and at G.N. Mills. The Central Government had sanctioned funds for these and works would begin immediately.
On Tiruchi Road, the four-lane flyover will be for 3.15 km, crossing the Sungam and Ramanathapuram junctions. Vehicle movement will be permitted on the stretch except on a few days. Columns will be raised at the centre and only a minimum area will be barricaded for this purpose, the official said. Almost 70 % of the vehicles on Tiruchi Road (from Government Hospital area) head towards Singanallur. These will start using the flyover when it is completed and traffic congestion will come down.
At Koundampalayam - Nallampalayam pirivu junction, the four-lane flyover will be for one km and will come up at a cost of ₹66 crore. The area available for the works is not much. So, the Highways Department will request the police for traffic diversion on some days. “Traffic should be diverted so that the works are completed early,” the official said. At G.N. Mills, the flyover is for 670 metres and will come up at a cost of ₹41 crore. Traffic congestion is high in this area during peak hours, the official pointed out.
