DCW issues notice to govt urging ban on sale of acid

The Delhi Commission for Women on Tuesday issued a notice to the Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) of the Delhi government, urging a ban on the sale of acid, said DCW officials.

The 10th day of the ongoing ‘Mahila Suraksha Padyatra’ saw several acid victims take part in the march, which is being conducted by the commission.

Highlighting the high instances of acid attacks in the Capital, the DCW wrote to the State government urging a complete ban on the sale of acid.

“Acid attacks in Delhi are continuing unchecked. The unregulated acid sale is a major cause for continued acid attacks against women…please provide an action taken the report to the commission on the steps taken for implementation of Supreme Court orders as well as recommendations of the DCW regarding banning of the retail sale of acid,” read the letter.

‘Despite SC orders’

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said, “Despite SC orders, acid continues to be sold in Delhi. This is unacceptable.” The Divisional Commissioner has been asked to respond and provide the action-taken report by March 14.
