Sabyasachi’s latest collection will be on every summer bride’s wishlist

The release of Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s spring/summer ’19 collection on Instagram feels familiar, yet different. Having clocked in two decades in the industry, the whisper of his legacy informs his signature opulent fare in his newest offering, titled ‘Fiza’. Crafting couture out of flimsy organdy and adding chintz florals to menswear, the couturier continues to surprise.

With the promise of summer beckoning around the corner, the designer serves up the frivolity of the season with fuss-free silhouettes in unassuming organdy. The colour palette moves from earthy neutrals—that you’ll want to bookmark for the next mehandi on your social calendar—to sorbet hues, and builds up to a climax with the showstopper rouge lehenga that Priyanka Chopra favoured for her Udaipur nuptials. Bearing in mind the demands of the season, the designer’s lexicon of summery silhouettes includes twirl-friendly togas and caftans, as well as hand-crushed saris punctuated with stately baroque embroidery. And for brides who want nothing less than a fairytale wedding, the designer also offers a western-style veil apart from the rectangular dupatta—also last spotted on Chopra.

The opulence of the ensembles is underscored by heritage jewellery, with motifs such as hand-carved peacocks sculpted out of 22-karat gold. Expect uncut diamonds, sapphires and Colombian emeralds to dominate your jewellery kit for the season. While keeping up with convention, the couturier’s flair for whimsy stays alive with his choice of fabric for wedding lehengas—the humble khadi. “As a bridal designer, I keep thinking, ‘What’s next?’, and I keep coming back to khadi. For me, it is the equivalent of wellness, and nothing can be more luxurious than that. When I look back at the last 20 years, my khadi bridal lehengas are what I am most proud of. Combined with Indian jewellery and flowers, they create a very potent and timeless image. Some of my most discerning customers globally have chosen to wear khadi lehengas for their wedding. Almost all of them are not on Instagram. Pity!” he quips.
