Pranjal Baruah | tnn | Mar 6, 2019, 04:21 ISTGuwahati: Nagaon Police on Tuesday detained at least four persons in connection with the gang rape of a differently abled woman in Kachua village. The 22-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by at least five men on Sunday night.
A Kachua police official said, “We have picked up four youths from the locality. Interrogation is on and more persons may be nabbed soon.” Police added that the woman has undergone medical tests and is currently in a stable condition.
Sources added that all those who were detained are local residents.
Meanwhile, villagers of Kachua have protested against “police inaction” and given them an ultimatum of 48 hours to nab all the culprits. “If police fail to arrest everyone involved in the crime, then villagers will themselves hunt down the culprits and punish them,” angry protesters said.
On Sunday evening, the woman went out on her bicycle for a ride. But when she did not return, her parents alerted the police and villagers. Though all searched the locality, she was untraceable at night. On Monday morning, she returned home by herself and then told her family that she had been gang-raped by five men repeatedly the previous night.
On Monday morning, police reached her house after which she took the police officials to the spot where she was raped. “The place of occurrence is some 12km away from her residence. We recovered the undergarments from the spot and sent them for forensic tests. She has been undergoing treatment at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health in Tezpur and she said that she did not know anyone of them,” police had earlier said.
