NEW DELHI: Delhi government has come across several cases of forgery in disability certificates to get monthly financial assistance from the social welfare department.

Department officials said they have been instructed to verify the certificates before approving and disbursing the monthly pension. “We have also asked officials to register FIRs against people using fake certificates,” a senior official said.

The department provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,500 to persons with special need. The amount has contribution from both Centre and the state government. The allowance is given to persons up to 60 years with disability not less than 40%. Delhi government gives assistance to about 80,000 such people, the official added.

Sources said a number of fraud cases were reported from social welfare offices in the last few months. A substantial number of them were from the capital’s southwest district.

“The applicants are required to apply online for the subsistence allowance and upload all necessary documents. While processing some applications recently, we realised there were discrepancies in the documents of some applicants. We sent their disability certificates for cross-verification to the issuing hospitals. In several cases, the hospitals replied that those certificates were never issued by them,” a senior official said.
