Gurgaon: The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) made it to the record books — Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records — with the conclusion of a 168-hour long cleanliness drive.
Started a week ago from the Gurgaon railway station, the cleanliness drive came to an end on Monday in Sector 43. The record was conferred on the corporation by Asia Book of Records conveyor Richa Sharma for conducting the longest such drive in Asia.

The closing ceremony was attended by local MP and Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh, deputy mayor Sunita Yadav, MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav along with a huge number of sanitation workers.

Talking about the drive, Singh said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the Swacchta drive when he mentioned it in his first speech from the Red Fort. We have to carry forward his initiative by keeping our cities clean.”

The MCG commissioner said that the primary objective behind the initiative was not to get the title but to involve more and more people in the initiatives. He said, “Our main focus this year is to make Gurgaon a clean and green city. We have already started the work on strengthening our solid and liquid management systems.”

Installation of art made from waste was put up in Sector 43 on Monday to mark the closing ceremony. This was done by a group of sanitation workers and school students. The idea behind the art installation was to raise awareness among people about the quantity of waste that is generated and how badly it affects the environment.

In the first leg of the 168-hour-long cleanliness drive, the sanitation workers had cleaned up 6 km of stretch starting from Gurgaon Railway station. Overall, around 28 such stretches were covered with over 100 km in terms of length and 2500 sanitation workers participated in the drive.

MCG, in its budget meeting, had announced its plans to conduct a ward-wise cleanliness campaign to address all issues related to solid and liquid waste management in the city. The initiative to streamline the process of trash collection and liquid waste management will start on March 15. It will be similar to last year’s Nigam Apke Dwar campaign.
