CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued notice to Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim on CBI’s plea seeking cancellation of his bail in the case related to castration of dera followers by him. The dera chief, who is serving jail term in rape and murder case, was granted bail by the special CBI judge Panchkula in October 2018.
While seeking cancellation of bail to Dera chief, CBI counsel Sumeet Goel, argued that considering the antecedents and criminal history of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the CBI court should not have granted him bail.
“He was convicted by special CBI court on August 25, 2017 in rape cases after that a huge law and order problem arose which by itself clearly shows and proves that the respondent (Gurmeet Ram Rahim) is likely to abscond and it will be a very uphill as also difficult task to bring him back to process of law and justice.
Therefore, the order dated October 5, 2018 granting him bail deserved to be set aside,” Goel had argued.
The CBI counsel also produced the record of other cases in which DSS chief has been convicted or facing prosecution, to prove his criminal background.
Hearing the CBI’s plea, Justice Daya Chaudhary has issued notice to Gurmeet Ram Rahim seeking his reply on CBI’s contentions.
The case would now come up for hearing on April 23.
On February 1, 2018, the CBI had charged dera chief and two doctors in relation to the castration of followers inside the dera. As per the charge-sheet, a large number of followers were castrated at the behest of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by Dr Pankaj Garg and Dr M P Singh.
They were charged under section 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 417 (cheating) of IPC.
As per the charge sheet, CBI found that the young boys used to join dera as ‘Sewadars’ were rendering valuable services in the functioning of Dera, free of cost and management of Dera was bent upon to retain them. “They planned to make them useless for rest of society by making them impotent and resorted to the castrations. It was done so that they could play in the hands of dera chief”, the CBI had found in its investigation.
Investigation by CBI has also revealed that Gurmeet Ram Rahim had adopted tactics of showing his closeness with such devotees who succumbed to his pressure for castration. The trial of the case is presently going on at the special CBI court Panchkula.
