Actor Sumalatha, wife of the late actor-turned-politician M.H. Ambareesh, reiterated that she would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Mandya constituency. She clarified, however, that so far no party has consulted her.

For a couple of weeks, she has been extensively touring the district to garner support from Mr. Ambareesh’s fans and Congress workers. However, she is said to be disappointed over the Congress not showing willingness to field her. She hinted on Monday that she could contest as an Independent.

“Victory and defeat are integral parts of electoral politics in a democratic system. I am not bothered about the results and will contest the elections,” she said. The veteran actor added that she was very impressed by the “tremendous support” being offered to her by Ambareesh’s supporters across the district.

“The public and supporters are forcing me to contest on Congress ticket. I am considering contesting as an Independent,” she said.

Land donated

Earlier in the day, she handed over the documents for a piece of land to the family of martyred CRPF jawan H. Guru. Guru’s wife Kalavathi and mother Chikkolamma received the documents and thanked the actor. The duo said they would never sell the land, no matter what difficulties they faced.

Guru, a native of Gudigere Colony near Kala Muddana Doddi, Maddur taluk, was killed in a terrorist attack at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14. His family had no land even for performing his last rites.
