Guwahati: A mentally challenged woman was allegedly gang-raped at Kachua village in central Assam’s Nagaon district, some 129 km from here, on Sunday night.
She was raped by at least five men and has been hospitalized.

“On Sunday evening, she went out on her bicycle for a ride. But when she did not return, her parents alerted the police and villagers. Though all searched the locality, she was untraceable at night. On Monday morning, she returned home by herself and then told her family that she had been gang-raped by five men repeatedly the previous night,” a police official at Kachua police station said.

On Monday morning, police reached her house and she took the police sleuths to the spot where she was raped.

“The place of occurrence is some 12km away from her residence. We recovered the undergarments from the spot and sent them for forensic tests,” the official added.

“She has been undergoing treatment at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health in Tezpur and she said that she did not know any of them,” police added.

Nagaon police probing the case, however, are finding it difficult to identify the culprits as they were unknown to the victim and she couldn’t recognize them properly. Police are yet to nab any of the culprits till filing the report.

Medical tests have been conducted and the reports are awaited.
