PATNA: Hundreds of devotees thronged different temples in the city to worship Lord Shiva on the occasion of Mahashivaratri on Monday.
Clad in red and yellow-coloured saris, married women observed daylong fast and prayed for the prosperity and good health of their hubbies. They also recited the ‘Shiv Chalisa’ along with the heads of different temples.
After returning home, Bank Road resident Neetu Paswan touched the feet of her husband and sought his blessings. She said, “I will break my fast tomorrow after worshipping Lord Shiva.”
Young girls could also be seen jostling each other in temples, trying to pour holy water on Shiva lingas on Monday. 19-year-old Akansha Kumari has been observing fast on Mahashivaratri since her school days.
“I offered flowers, fruits, bilva (‘bel patra’) and betel (‘paan’) leaves to Lord Shiva. I prayed for the well-being of my family and ate fruits as ‘prasad’,” the Shiekhpura resident told this newspaper.
Another devotee Puja Mehta, who lives in Kumhrar, observed fast on Mahashivaratri for the second time. “I wish to find the perfect match for myself. So, I observed ‘nirjala upvas’ (without water) this time,” the 25-year-old said.
Agamkuan resident Aparna Sinha has heard from her parents that white is a colour associated with Lord Shiva. “I wore a white dress and read the ‘Shiv Chalisa’ after worshipping Lord Shiva,” she said.
Many devotees also participated in ‘jagrans’ and ‘kirtans’ at night and prayed to Lord Shiva to help them overcome darkness and ignorance.
