‘Switch off screen, switch on possibilities’: AoP mantra for 2019
Chaitanya Deshpande | TNN | Mar 6, 2019, 04:49 ISTNagpur: Acknowledging concerns of parents and teachers over increasing screen addiction among youngsters, including toddlers, paediatricians have decided to dedicate entire year 2019 for creating awareness about ill-effects of uncontrolled use of mobiles, television, tabs and computers.
For city-based Academy of Paediatrics (AoP) ‘Switch off screen, switch on possibilities’ will be the theme for 2019. Doctors will visit more than 200 schools during the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meetings and share their expertise on how to discourage kids from mobile addiction.
Dr Ravindra Bhelonde, president of AoP, Nagpur, told TOI that paediatricians were flooded with complaints from parents about their kids addiction to various gadgets. “Surveys by global medical agencies state that people under 18 years of age spend average seven hours a day watching some or the other screen. Due to this, they are losing physical fitness, developing posture defects, eye problems and even psychological problems,” he said.
“Parenting becomes most important factor to deal with such cases. I believe, our members can create significant awareness in parents in this regard,” he said. In fact, paediatricians have already visited 15 schools and started creating awareness at platforms like healthy baby competitions where they are invited as chief guests.
Dr Mahesh Turale, honorary secretary of AoP said ‘Mission Kishor Uday’ (MKU), an initiative to engage with parents, teachers, caretakers, and teenagers on issues of mental health will also be implemented in the city. Doctors will work along with community organizations to prevent adolescent suicides, he added.
“AoP conducts many social initiatives like free check-up and offers medical facilities to all inmates of Vimalashram orphanage, and free camps at Melghat where kids are malnourished,” said Turale.
On March 10, the AoP has organized installation ceremony of the new general body for 2019. Dr Ashish Satav will deliver Late Dr DG Gan oration on ‘Tribal health and solutions’.
