A man has been charged over the alleged abduction and carjacking of a young woman on the Gold Coast. 

The 26-year-old was on the phone to her mother when she was allegedly forced into her car by a stranger at a shopping centre car park in Robina at around 5pm on Monday.

Police allege the man demanded the woman drive north on the M1 motorway while covering her face and pulling her hair to try to stop her from screaming.

They located the woman safe and well a short time later near Exit 66 at Gaven after the alleged attacker fled into bushland.

A man was taken into custody after he attended Mudgeeraba Police Station on Tuesday night following a public appeal for help. 

A 47-year-old Mudgeeraba man has since been charged with one count each of kidnapping, unlawful entry of a vehicle and assault. 

He was remanded in custody overnight to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on  Wednesday.

The woman was not physically injured during the alleged incident.

She was pictured at the scene dressed in a forensic suit before she was taken away for DNA testing, Seven News reported.

Gold Coast detectives said the woman's mother helped officers save her from the alleged ordeal.

'Bluetooth has kicked in and the mother could hear the conversation and what was going on in the vehicle, so she had the foresight to call police,' Detective Inspector Brendan Smith told reporters on Tuesday.

'Police could then actually ring the victim's phone and speak to the offender, and negotiate with him to let her pull over.'

Police are also investigating an similar alleged car-jacking incident that occurred later on Monday in Robina.

Det Insp Smith warned drivers not to pick up hitchhikers and to be aware of their own safety.

'If you get into your vehicle, lock the doors,' he said.
