Ghosn granted bail after three month detention

Nissan's ex-chairman Carlos Ghosn was granted bail according to his lawyers on Tuesday (March 5) The court set bail at almost $9 million on condition he submit to video surveillance and stay in Japan.

Ghosn's been in custody for over three months.

He's fighting charges of financial misconduct while head of a three-way alliance between Nissan, Mitsubishi and Renault.

Nissan says he under-reported his compensation for nearly a decade to the tune of $82 million dollars and could face 10 years in jail.

Ghosn has denied wrongdoing.

Tuesday's decision is a win for his new legal team.

It's now headed by Junichiro Hironaka, aka 'the Razor' in Japan, who's led successful and aggressive defenses of several high-profile cases.

On Monday (March 4) he said he'd pursue a different strategy in Ghosn's defense.

This system has been criticised all over the world.

We would like to appeal against that situation" Later on Monday Ghosn's team also handed a dossier to UN human rights officials that they claim showed Ghosn's rights had been violated during his detention in Japan.

How can we explain that he has been placed in solitary confinement for 100 days?

How can we explain that he is not authorized to wear a watch, if it is not to disorient him regarding the time?

How can we explain that while he asks for another blanket, they answer no, he can only have two blankets during the cold Japanese winter?" On Tuesday Nissan said it was not in a position to comment on Ghosn's bail.

And the Tokyo court later said Japanese prosecutors appealed the court's decision to approve Ghosn's request for release on bail.
