CHENNAI: A 35-year-old maid employed at DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan's house popped several sleeping pills after police detained her for questioning in connection with a theft case reported in the leader's house in Kilpauk last Thursday.
Anbazhagan's personal secretary Natarajan lodged a complaint with the Secretariat Colony police saying that an 11 sovereigns of gold, including four bangles and a bracelet, had gone missing from the house. Police said one of the family members getting ready for a function on Thursday noticed the jewellery missing from. The lock of the safe, however, was in tact, suggesting a key was used to open it, police said.
The family suspected maid Nalini, who had gone on leave on February 23 citing ill health. The Secretariat Colony police detained Nalini, a resident of Villivakkam, for questioning. They let her go after a couple of hours. Police said Nalini went to her sister's house in Kilpauk.
On Sunday night, she took some sleeping pills and blood pressure tablets and swooned. Her sister, who noticed this, took Nalini to a hospital. Doctors told police that her condition was stable.
"We questioned not just her but a few other employees as many had access to the room," said an investigating officer. Police are checking CCTV footage for leads.
