Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Director-General Rajesh Ranjan, in an interview to The Hindu, says security at 61 airports across the country was in the hands of the CISF and the Force was ready for any eventuality. Excerpts from the interview:
CISF is celebrating its golden jubilee year. What are the landmarks for the Force?
During its 50 years, the CISF has grown manifold in its credibility and capability. Currently, with a sanctioned strength of more than 1,56,000 personnel, the CISF provides security cover to 345 undertakings under various sectors. The CISF has earned the reputation of being a multi-skilled and tech-savvy force.
What is the take of CISF on security of smaller airports under the Regional Connectivity Scheme? Should the smaller airports be secured by other security agencies?
Recently, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has identified 45 airports under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS). Out of 45 airports, nine are already under CISF cover. Involvement of other security agencies in airport security could jeopardise the security chain. I suggest all airports should have same level of security and if government wants, the CISF is ready for deployment of its personnel at airports under the RCS. We are experienced in airport security and have been handling it for the last 18 years.
What are the challenges that the CISF is facing with the expansion of Delhi Metro services?
It is the lifeline of Delhi-NCR and we regularly review the threat perception and functioning of the CISF at regular intervals so that necessary arrangements are put in place to meet the requirement. Delhi Metro network consists of eight lines with a total length of 327 km with 239 metro stations. Almost 28-30 lakh commuters are using Delhi Metro network everyday, of which about three lakh are women.
How productive was the recently organised aviation meet in Delhi?
The CISF organised a two-day International Aviation Security Seminar-2018 at Vigyan Bhawan, on October 2018 with the theme “Global Co-operation: Secure Aviation”.
The seminar provided an opportunity to the participants and experts from India as well as abroad to learn and exchange thoughts and ideas related to aviation security.
What type of security upgradation will happen at airports?
We have successfully tested the installation of body scanners at IGI airport and are testing ‘persons tracking technology’ to ensure faster security clearance of air passengers. For implementation, we have to get clearance from authorities concerned.
