Thousands of campers evacuated from Wilsons Promontory ahead of long weekend

Thousands of visitors and tourists at Wilsons Promontory were evacuated over the weekend, as an out of control fire in hilly terrain threatened the township of Tidal River.

The popular national park, south-east of Melbourne, will be closed for the upcoming Labour Day long weekend and will remain closed until further notice as the fire burns in inaccessible terrain.

On Monday afternoon, the 239 hectare fire was burning 3.5 kilometres north of Tidal River and was heading towards Wilsons Promontory Road.

The advice warning from emergency services states there is the potential for the fire to impact Tidal River in the next few days.

Asset protection works are being undertaken to try and protect the area, including houses and structures.

Boat users have also been told they cannot come ashore while the park is closed.

On Saturday, police and other emergency services worked to evacuate 3000 people from The Prom.

Campers, those who have booked accommodation or day visitors won't be allowed into the park this weekend.

A community newsletter circulated by VicEmergency has advised those who have bookings will be contacted and receive a full refund.

The bushfire is one of 19 currently burning across the state. Homes have been lost and hundreds of firefighters are battling blazes across Gippsland.
