Russell back in Scotland fold ahead of Wales clash

2019-03-04 19:54

Edinburgh - Finn Russell has returned to bolster Scotland's squad ahead of their clash with Six Nations leaders Wales at Murrayfield this weekend, the Scottish Rugby Union announced on Monday.

The influential flyhalf was back in action with Paris-based club Racing 92 at the weekend, having missed Scotland's third round 27-10 loss away to France with concussion.

Scotland have also welcomed back forwards Hamish Watson, WP Nel, Sam Skinner and Grant Stewart, with coach Gregor Townsend due to name his side to play Wales on Thursday.

But star fullback Stuart Hogg won't face Warren Gatland's outfit as he continues to receive treatment for the shoulder injury that forced him off early during the defeat by champions Ireland in the second weekend of the tournament.

Nevertheless, forwards coach Danny Wilson was glad of the fresh influx of players

"It's great to add them to the squad," Wilson told reporters on Monday.

"It's been well documented some of the players who have been in and out of the squad with some of the injuries we have had.

"Finn is in camp, training today, and all good, so he will be working hard towards the weekend," he said.

After starting the Championship with a 33-20 win at home to perennial strugglers Italy, the Scots are now looking to avoid a third defeat in a row.

Wales are chasing a Grand Slam but Welshman Wilson was adamant Scotland would not lack for motivation either as they try to atone for a poor showing in Paris.

"It's about an improved performance from the France game," he said.

"We have been pretty honest in camp. Our performance wasn't of the standard we have produced. We have moved on now and we are preparing for Wales."

Wilson added: "The motivation levels should be through the roof to play a side that's looking for a Grand Slam.

"As a collective, as coaches and players, we weren't happy with our performance against France and we have come back very keen to put that right."
