Assam govt orders ban on molasses

Chief Minister Sarbananda Monday ordered a ban on molasses in the state.

Chairing a high level meeting here in the aftermath of the hooch tragedy in two districts - Golaghat and Jorhat - which claimed 158 lives, asked Alok Kumar to ban molasses in the state, a government release said.

Stating the ban has been necessitated as molasses are widely used to prepare 'sulai' - an intoxicating drink, the release said the CM also asked the to direct all deputy commissioners to ensure ban on molasses in all the districts.

Meanwhile, one of the major dealers of molasses Mahesh Beria absconding since the liquor tragedy was arrested Monday from his relative's house at Jonai in district, police said.

Search was on for Beria's absconding son and other molasses dealers, the police added.
