Jaguar I-Pace Is The 2019 European Car Of The Year Winner After Tie-Breaker With Alpine A110

Jaguar has nabbed its first-ever European Car of the Year title with the I-Pace, which was announced on the verge of the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

It wasn’t an outright victory for the electric SUV though, as it tied with the Alpine A110 in the jury voting. According to Autocar, which took part in the vote, the Jaguar was “declared the winner after a tie-break based on how many judges had given a first-place vote to each car. The I-Pace received 18 first-place votes, compared to 16 for the A110.”.

Taking the award on behalf of Jaguar was Design Director Ian Callum who, commented: “Why are people still surprised that electric cars win these awards? This is the future, we’d better all accept that. This was a wonderful car for the team to design and work on, because it’s a unique new car on a unique platform. For me, after 40 years in the business, this is the most exciting car I’ve ever had the chance to work on.”

As mentioned above, the Alpine A110 came in second, followed closely by the new generation Kia Ceed. The fourth place is reserved for the Ford Focus, whereas the Citroen C5 Aircross is on the fifth position. The Peugeot 508 mid-size car comes next, followed by the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

Last year, the European Car of the Year award went to another SUV, the Volvo XC40, which was favored over the Seat Ibiza and BMW 5-Series. The year before, it was PSA’s turn to win, with the Peugeot 3008, and in 2016, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra walked home with the title. Before that, the Volkswagen Passat, Peugeot 308 and Volkswagen Golf were all declared winners in 2015, 2014 and 2013, respectively.
