A driver is accused of smashing the windows of a car and throwing wild punches at passengers after he allegedly caused a minor collision.

Footage shows the 34-year-old man confronting Salim, 20, and his friends, who were driving in a blue hatchback on Sydney's Great Western Highway on Sunday just before 4pm.

The man, who was allegedly three times over the legal alcohol limit, was seen smashing the blue hatchback's front window with a car jack at a Westmead street.

The alleged attacker was filmed with blood on his fist, arms and mouth.

The 20-year-old and his friends claim they did nothing to provoke the incident.

'Never seen anything like it in my life. It was like a movie,' Salim told 7News.

Salim and his friends were initially driving next to another group of friends who were in a silver Volkswagon Golf, where a chunk of the back window had been smashed.

'He threw a couple of swings at me. He threw a jack at me,' Ahamed Malas said.

The 34-year-old man was arrested after police arrived at the scene.

Police are investigating what triggered the lead up to the incident and say it is likely more than one person could be charged.

'When people take matters into their own hands, it can just exacerbate situations,' Inspector Karl Stone of Cumberland Police said.

'That behaviour isn't tolerable by any standards.'
