Children’s creativity comes to the fore at The Hindu Young World painting contest

Over 200 children participated in the 19th edition of The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2019 that was held at the Army Public School on K. Kamaraj Road here on Sunday.

Junior category

In the junior category, open to students from Class 4 to 6, topics given were, ‘A day at the Beach’, ‘Man’s Best Friend’ and ‘Holiday in the Hills’.

Antara Alai, Class 4 student of HAL Public School, Vijinapura, bagged the first prize. “As soon as I saw that one of the themes was ‘Man’s Best Friend’, the cats in my apartment block came to her mind. I play with these cats. So, it was easy for me to draw and paint a cat,” the nine-year-old said. Painting has been a hobby for her for the past four years.

Shri Haridra S., from The Oxford Senior Secondary School (CBSE), J. P. Nagar, won the second prize, while the third prize was awarded to Yashwin B., student of Presidency School Bangalore East, Kasturinagar.

Consolation prizes were awarded to Shrujala T. J, Jagruthi P, Laksh Tarnath, Lakshmi P, Ankith Sahu and Jeevan Prabhakar; Lavanya.

Senior category

The topics for the seniors category — open to students from Classes 7 to 9 — were ‘Adventure Park’, ‘Role Reversal’, ‘Animals and Humans’ and ‘Underwater Life’.

Darshan J. from Sree Cauvery School, Indiranagar, recollected his recent trip to Chennai and a visit to a museum on Marina Beach to draw inspiration for his painting on the topic ‘Underwater Life’ and bagged the first prize.

The class 8 student said he enjoys painting during the holidays and is encouraged by his parents to follow his hobby. “My father shares a lot of ideas for painting with me,” he said.

K. Sanjana Shenoy, student of The Oxford Senior Secondary School (CBSE), J. P. Nagar, won the second prize. K. Lakshmi, student of Air Force School, Jalahalli, bagged the third prize.

Consolation prizes in the senior category were awarded to Hari Priya Y.S., Dhanush H.N., Navya Gowda, Daksha P. Jain, Suhana Shankar, Mridula V. and Sanjana R.

Winners in both categories received trophies and merit certificates from The Hindu and goodie bags from the sponsors.

Babu Jattakar, assistant professor at the College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat and V.R.C. Shekar, president, Karnataka Cartoonists Association were the judges.

Valedictory function

Peter Chittaranjan, deputy general manager, National Insurance Company Ltd., John Louis Chirayath, deputy vice-president, Federal Bank and Veena Sahani, principal, Army Public School, gave away prizes to the winners. All the 214 students received participation certificates.

The event was powered by Thyrocare. National Insurance Company Ltd., was the associate sponsor. Federal Bank was the regional partner. Soulfull was the nutrition partner, while Rasna the beverage partner. Army Public School was the venue partner.
