ATTINGAL: Two boys, aged eight and nine, drowned in an abandoned pond at Sreenivasapuram in Ayiroor on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Rahul R S (8), son of Ratheesh and Sobha and Prajith P (9), son of Shan and Preethi.
Both the children were residents of Thachode colony in Sreenivasapuram near Chemmaruthy village.
According to Ayiroor police, the incident occurred on Saturday evening. Both boys, along with their mothers, went to take bath in a village pond at Oottukuzhy.
“After taking bath, the boys went to the neighbouring pond in an abandoned property apparently for fishing, while their mothers stayed back for washing clothes. The pond situated on private property was covered with algae and other water plants. Both the boys might have stepped into the deep part of the pond and drowned,” said a police officer.
When the boys did not return to the Oottukuzhy pond even after one hour, their mothers panicked. They alerted the villagers and family members and went to the nearby pond and found the footwear of the boys on the bank. Later they informed Ayiroor police station at 7.30 pm.
“On hearing the news, we rushed to the spot and pulled out the bodies with the help of residents by 8.30pm. They were then immediately taken to Government Taluk Hospital in Varkala where the doctors declared them brought dead,” the officer added.
Both the boys were the students of Govt. LPS School, Sreenivasapuram.
After postmortem, the bodies were handed over to the family members on Sunday. Ayiroor police have registered a case under section 174 CRPC (unnatural death).
