Abhinandan will fly again after he is declared medically fit: IAF chief

COIMBATORE: Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa on Monday said that post-treatment medical fitness of Abhinandan Varthaman would decide when Wing Commander,
who was caught and released by Pakistan
+ last week, can return to the cockpit.
Dhanoa told reporters at Sulur air force station here that Abhinandan is undergoing medical checks and would receive treatment if required.
"Post-ejection, he has undergone a medical check. Whatever treatment is required, we will give it to him. Once he gets the medical fitness, he will get into a fighter cockpit," he told reporters here.

"If he is found fit enough to fly fighter aircraft, he will be inducted into a squadron. If he is not fit, then he will be inducted once he gets back his fitness to fly one,” Dhanoa said.
Underlining that medical fitness is a topmost priority for the IAF, the Air Chief explained, "Ejection is something that takes a toll on your body and if you are not perfectly fit and God forbid you have to eject again, you will be spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair. We do not take a chance with the fitness of a fighter pilot."

Abhinandan, who was admitted to a military hospital after his return from Pakistan, has expressed his desire to senior IAF officials that he wanted to return to the cockpit as soon as possible.
